PSYCHOTHERAPY

The type of psychotherapy I practice is called psychodynamic, or depth psychotherapy. It is an approach that recognizes the existence of an unconscious mind that influences our behaviour, thoughts and feelings. It is our unconscious mind that makes us do things that we know are against our better interests such as continuing in unhealthy relationship patterns, giving in to addictive cravings, or even saying something we didn't consciously intend to say. Our unconscious mind is also the source of our deepest creativity.

This type of therapy is fairly long term because it provides a way for people to fully explore their life - how the past is affecting the present, and how they came to be where they are now. It also takes time for a client to develop the depth of trust in a therapist that is required before they can fully explore their most troubling experiences.

This type of therapy also helps people to identify their deepest longings and their lack of fulfillment and to open to their inner self. I believe that often it is our pain and suffering that creates the opportunity to examine our lives and move towards a greater sense of meaning and fulfillment. This often also leads to a deeper connection to ourselves and others.

I like to work with dreams, and sometimes use other techniques such as guided meditation, deep relaxation, or focusing, to assist my clients with access to their unconscious mind.
